Aquablation vs Traditional Surgery: What Is the Difference?

By Dr. Ahmed Ali Alnaimi, Consultant Urological Surgeon

For decades, the standard surgical treatment for BPH has been transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). It works well, but it uses an electrical heat loop to remove tissue, and the surgeon controls it by hand.

Aquablation differs in three important ways

  1. 1Planning: the surgeon maps the treatment on live ultrasound before any tissue is removed, so the plan is tailored to your anatomy.
  2. 2Precision: a robot carries out the plan with consistent accuracy.
  3. 3No heat: a high-velocity waterjet removes the tissue, avoiding thermal injury to surrounding structures.

Clinical trials comparing Aquablation with TURP found similar improvements in urinary symptoms, with significantly lower rates of ejaculatory dysfunction after Aquablation. Unlike TURP, which becomes harder and riskier in large prostates, Aquablation also performs consistently across a wide range of prostate sizes.

TURP and other procedures still have their place. The right choice depends on your prostate, your health and your priorities, which is exactly what a consultation is for.
